New Curators is a paid year-long curatorial training programme based in London for aspiring curators of contemporary art from structurally disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.
Why?
Access to curatorial careers is not equally distributed. Who is able to enter and progress in the field is shaped by structural socio-economic conditions, including unequal access to education, professional networks, financial resources, and exposure to the arts.
New Curators exists to create opportunities for individuals who have faced these barriers by offering an intensive year-long paid curatorial training that is free and paid a Real Living Wage.
We want to help make the contemporary art world more accessible and equitable because we believe this will make it richer and more relevant.
What?
Our course is designed to equip aspiring curators of contemporary art with the knowledge, practical skills, networks and confidence needed to thrive in the art world.
The programme is divided into five strands:
Academic seminars
in curatorial theory and practice, and art history
Skills training
covering essential topics such as writing for different audiences, public speaking, budgeting and fundraising
Network development
meetings with a wide range of curators, artists and arts professionals and regular studio, gallery and museum visits in the UK and internationally
Exhibition-making
extensive practical experience working collaboratively on contemporary art exhibitions, publications and public programmes
Coaching and mentorship
fellows are mentored and have access to regular coaching sessions
If you think you have what it takes to become a future curator and change-maker, and need a leg-up please read on.
